all together i have a new (uncracked) exhaust manifold, engine mounts, oil pan gasket, rear brake cylinders and some questionable front wheel bearing assemblies..they are used and i dont know if they much better than the ones i currently have as i havent had any time to asses them let alone do any wrenching the rig itself.basically... I'm trying to get it road worthy before it get so cold i cant ride my bike to campus. then in the spring make it offroad worthy with a new suspension/tires/bumpers Smile I have a feeling its going to end up a wheeling rig in the next year or so (money providing)

the reason i was thinking indoors is that i'm not the most experienced mechanic and would most likely not be able to finish the job alone before the snow flies, ive checked out a few writups on the manifold and it looks easy enough wut the right tools. but if i get help quick enough outdoors would work for sure.

if you or anyone else knows someone with super human jeep skills than can help me have them post here or email me: ajmussel@mtu.edu

I would say come to one of the meetings, and afterwards talk to the president (Eric) and tell him your situation, he'll probably be able to hook you up. That's what we did for my friends jeep (put front tow hooks on it and need to look/work on the sway bar).

The most difficult part you are going to change is the wheel bearings. While you have those apart you probably want to throw some new u-joints in as well. A tip for getting the wheel bearings out---- loosen the 3 bolts that hold the bearing on a couple of threads, then use an impact socket and an extension (if you need one) to wedge between the bolt and the axle tube. Next, start the jeep and have someone turn the steering wheel while you use the powersteering as a press, working your way around to all of the bolts until it pushes the bearing out.

Oh, and you will want to remove the nut that retains the axle shaft while the bearing is still on the vehicle. It makes it a lot easier than trying to do it in a vice.

The engine mounts are literally a 30 min. job and the oil pan gasket is messy. The rest just depends on how rusty everything is.

thanks alot, i bought a 91 2dr for parts before school and i took these wheel bearings off it, aperently they were were recently changed (or so i was told). i could have used that trick then. Confused ..it was a pain in the ass to say the least.

im thinking i will email Eric to see if he can look into it before the meeting, that way i will have a better chance on heving somthing locked before thanksgiving.

Thanks again

ahh disposible wheelers....Yeah the unit bearings are a bitch. but once you change them and are running larger tires, they will become easy cause you will be changing them often. I would recommend buyin some lifetime warranty ones. Teh oil pan gasket is messy. I would strongly suggest letting the enginse set overnite so all the oil drains down to the pan. makes it nicer so no oil is drippin all over ya. Also if ya plan to lock the front, i would look for some 297 u joint sized shafts. can be found in 93 and up cherokees iirc. but i think caldwell and i took care of all the spare front shafts up there Laughing

yeah i only took the used bearings off the parts jeep because i knew i only was going to get one day to strip parts between when i bought it and when i moved up here and i was mad about not having time or tools to get any goodies from under the hood, if there was any....it was stuck shut and even putting a floor jack under the one side of the hood and trying to work the latch with every hand tool i could think of i never got the thing open...it was like getting blue balled on a one night stand...i have been left always wondering Crying or Very sad but hey it was $200 and i got 2dr windows, wheel bearings, all the signals and a spare grill...and best of all a brand new never installed radiator..still has the price tag on it $150 Laughing
